Sociology Graduate Student Emergency Award
The Sociology Department has established a Graduate Student Emergency Award to help graduate students experiencing a financial catastrophe that hinders their ability to complete the MA degree. A student can request up to $1,000. The department will pause this award upon depletion of funds.
Criteria to Apply
- A graduate student in the Sociology program or the MPA/ Sociology MA Dual Degree program
- In good academic standing
- Experiencing a financial catastrophe that leaves the student potentially unable to pay key bills, including rent/mortgage, groceries, or childcare, that constrains their ability to continue in the MA program
Application Process
Write a 1-2 page statement explaining your financial catastrophe and how this impedes your ability to complete the MA degree. Students may apply at any time during the calendar year while enrolled in the Sociology Graduate Program.

Teaching Assistant Positions
Every semester, the Sociology Department offers graduate students the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant (TA), which offer students the opportunity to learn pedagogical skills and receive a modest stipend. The department will send a call for TA applications to all graduate students prior to the start of the semester. These positions are awarded competitively. Contact Courtney Cowling for more information.

Research Assistant Positions
The Sociology Department also provides opportunities for graduate students to work as research assistants (RA) to support faculty-led projects. These positions allow students to gain valuable research experience, develop methodological skills, and receive a modest stipend. Contact Courtney Cowling for more information.

Center for Student Research
Highly qualified graduate students may also be eligible for additional support through the Center for Student Research, which offers funding, mentorship, and resources to enhance student-led research and scholarly development. Interested students are encouraged to explore these opportunities to further enrich their academic experience.
